The first was the 1988 Strawberry Fire in Millard County that killed three people and burned 936,000 acres. The Warm Spring Fire remains the third largest in state history. The fire, which killed three people, burned 329,000 acres and affected almost 100,000 people. The total damage exceeds $10 million. Dry conditions and warmer climate have favored the wildfire trend. Climate change may also be playing a role as evidenced by last year's large fires. Both types of fires have become more prevalent in recent years. According to the BLM, there were about 9,000 wildfires on the U.S. public lands and grasslands in 2000. By 2011 that number had risen to about 22,000. That's a 203 percent increase in six years. Last year's fire season was the third-busiest on record. "Based on fire activity, I expect 2012 to be another busy fire year," said BLM wildland firefighter Brett Nicholson. "We have already experienced a significant increase in fire in the nation's forests and grasslands." Since 2000, the agency has said fire suppression costs have increased more than 100 percent. During the same period, expenditures for vegetation management and forest and grassland restoration have risen about 70 percent.
